STATEMENT OF CONDEMNATION
On the State-Sponsored Genocide and Ethnic Cleansing of the Amhara People and Other Vulnerable Populations in Ethiopia

The Federation of Amharas in North America (FANA) issues this firm and unwavering condemnation of the Abiy Ahmed Ali regime and its network of diaspora agents. We are united in our deep outrage over the ongoing, state-sponsored genocide and ethnic cleansing of the Amhara people and other vulnerable communities in Ethiopia. History shows that genocide is never stopped by the mere passage of time, but only when nations choose to act. We urgently call on the international community to recognize these undeniable atrocities and hold accountable those who enable them.

Since taking power in 2018, Abiy Ahmed Ali has led a brutal campaign of terror, deliberately targeting unarmed civilians instead of engaging legitimate armed forces. The regime uses ruthless, state-backed death squads such as the GEDDA COMMANDOS, GACHERNA CIRNA, REPPEE LOLA, and QERROOS, operating under the protection of the National Army, to advance its genocidal agenda. This violence is aimed at wiping out Amharas, Gurages, Tigrayans, Gammos, Gedos, Gumuz, and other indigenous groups living in the so-called Oromia region. Our condemnation is directed solely at the regime, its leadership, and its armed enforcers β never at any people. Ordinary Oromo citizens also suffer under this governmentβs repression, and no community benefits from the crimes committed in its name.

The regime has orchestrated barbaric, large-scale massacres in Wollega, resulting in the brutal slaughter of hundreds of defenseless men, women, and children. State forces and allied militias have engaged in the systematic looting, destruction, and burning of entire civilian villages to the ground. This deliberate campaign of terror has forcibly displaced thousands of survivors, leaving them entirely homeless, destitute, and facing a manufactured humanitarian catastrophe β a catastrophe that is not the by-product of this violence but its intended result.

Media platforms like OMN (Oromo Media Network) and other radicalized outlets and individuals are being used to fuel targeted violence and spread genocidal rhetoric. The example of Radio TΓ©lΓ©vision Libre des Mille Collines shows how mass killings are enabled by broadcasts long before they happen on the ground. Sadly, that same pattern is now playing out in Ethiopia for all the world to see.

Some actors, especially those living in North America and Australia, misuse the democratic freedoms of their adopted countries to support and encourage ethnic cleansing in Ethiopia. They run coordinated gaslighting campaigns, intentionally denying the reality of the Amhara genocide to protect the regime from international scrutiny. By maliciously exploiting social media, they further harm thousands of innocent civiliansβmocking their pain and inciting more violence. The freedoms they enjoy abroad were never meant to be twisted into tools for atrocities back home.

The regime has willfully ignored explicit, dire warnings from the Lemkin Institute for Genocide Prevention, the European Center for Law and Justice (ECLJ), Genocide Prevention in Ethiopia (GPE), and other international watchdogs. By weaponizing the state apparatus against its own citizens, the regime is currently executing atrocities on a scale mirroring the historic tragedies of Rwanda, Kosovo, and Bosnia. In each of those cases, the warnings were on record, credible, and disregarded until the graves were counted.
VI. OUR DEMANDS
FANA unequivocally condemns the regime of Abiy Ahmed Ali and its diaspora supporters for the horrific genocide being carried out against civilian Amharas and other Ethiopians. We urge the international community to take swift, decisive action to stop this ongoing atrocity and to hold those responsible for these crimes against humanity accountable. Specifically, we call for:
An independent international investigative body, with full authority and unrestricted access, to record these atrocities and preserve evidence for future prosecution.
Targeted sanctions, including asset freezes and travel bans, aimed at the officials, commanders, and financiers responsible for these crimes and the incitement that fuels them.
Immediate and unhindered humanitarian access to Wollega and all other affected areas, along with ensuring the safety of displaced civilians.
Referral of these crimes to the appropriate international criminal jurisdiction, and the pursuit of universal-jurisdiction cases where national courts permit.
The governments of the United States, Canada, and Australia will investigate residents of their territories who solicit, fund, or encourage atrocity crimes abroad, in line with their own laws and human rights obligations.
Social media platforms should enforce their own rules against incitement to genocide and preserve the related content as evidence. History wonβt question whether the international community was informedβthe record already shows that. The real question will be what the international community did in response.
